Welcome to Saxtoberfest 2019, an entire month focused on saxophonists, saxophones, and sax gear! From special promotions, giveaways, and rare and unusual instruments, to special guests and newly carried accessories, we are packing the month with everything saxophone-related.

Dr. Scott Campbell

Practical methods for developing professional tone, intonation, and articulation for concert and jazz saxophone.

Attend Dr. Campbell’s practical methods clinic to learn effective strategies used in the nation’s top music programs. Saxophonists will leave with the proper tools and ability to immediately apply Dr. Campbell’s concepts into their own playing. This session is also great for the band director interested in improving their program’s saxophone section.

Dr. Scott Campbell has performed as a soloist in Australia, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, and throughout the United States. Has appeared with various ensembles, most notably the Dallas Pops Orchestra, Plano Symphony, Odysseus Chamber Orchestra and the Allen Philharmonic and performed with musicians such as The O’Jays, Martina McBride, and Ben Folds. Along with numerous solo recitals, Dr. Campbell has given world-premiere performances at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biannual conference.

Dr. Campbell has served on the faculty of Southwestern Adventist University and Mountain View College and maintained a large studio that averaged between 80-100 private students in the DFW area. His students have gone on to be accepted into prestigious programs such as Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, Peabody Conservatory, the New School, University of North Texas, Berklee College of Music, and Interlochen Arts Academy.

Dr. Campbell received his doctorate degree in saxophone performance from the University of North Texas where he served as Teaching Fellow of saxophone and taught a large studio of saxophone students.

In addition to performing and teaching, Dr. Campbell has been featured as an interviewee in The Instrumentalist, Southwestern Musician, The Wave, served as a busy clinician for Vandoren, and has presented master classes and clinics throughout the US and China.

Currently, Dr. Campbell serves as Woodwind Category Manager for Conn-Selmer, Inc.

Sit back and enjoy while Theo presents the evolution of the saxophone mouthpiece, with videos of famous musicians throughout history, and explanations of how the mouthpiece designs affected their music. A rare opportunity to learn mouthpiece refacing fundamentals from master mouthpiece designer and technician Theo Wanne. In this four-hour course Theo will teach you step by step how to improve response and performance of ANY woodwind mouthpiece.

Pre-requisite tools:  Theo Wanne Mouthpiece Refacing Kit (available at Bellingham Wind Works) 

Other required supplies: glass plate, 400 and 320 grit sandpaper (bring your own or purchase at Bellingham Wind Works 10% off) – glass supplies are limited, if you supply your own, please make sure it is level and flat. 

Optional tools: sanding sticks and jewelers files. (bring your own or purchase at Bellingham Wind Works 10% off).  

Practice mouthpieces will be provided or bring your own.

Danny will discuss his equipment and experience as a soprano and tenor player in Chicago-based jazz-rock fusion band Marbin. You will have an opportunity to check out a wide variety of Wanne gear and talk with Danny. Theo Wanne mouthpiece machinist and player Matt Ambrose will be on hand to discuss products.

We’re excited to have Marbin back October 12th in conjunction with their upcoming show at The Firefly! These guys are incredible musicians full of musical knowledge and insight from lots of miles on the road.

Marbin will join us at 5PM to discuss their do-it-yourself success and their craft of jazz-rock fusion. Marbin travels extensively from their home base of Chicago to share their music and teach. They cover topics about their music, music theory, the music industry and more.

Come and see in-person examples of extraordinarily unique members of the saxophone family, including Contrabass saxophone and a live disassembly of an Eppelsheim Soprillo saxophone!

Saxophones that will be shown and played include Soprillo, Sopranino, Saxello, F-mezzo, C Soprano, Buescher Straight Alto, C-melody, Bass, and Contrabass, as well as live performances on the Straight Alto Saxophone of Hindemith’s Konzerstück for two Alto Saxophones and Gregory Wanamaker’s Duo Sonata for Clarinet and Alto Saxophone. 

The Soprillo is the smallest and highest member of the saxophone family, and it has a veritable gamut of innovative design elements not seen on any other saxophone, such as special venting mechanisms, dual-purpose keywork, and an octave key on the side of the mouthpiece. During her class, Krista will discuss the ins and outs of saxophone mouthpieces, reeds, and ligatures as well as cover tips for getting the most our of your reeds with proper care and storage. All attendees will get a chance to try out D’Addario products, chat with Krista, a D’Addario product specialist, and receive some free reed samples.
