Shop Manager and Tech Description

Description of job: Wind Works is looking for a new woodwind tech and shop manager. Applicants should have experience in flute, clarinet, and saxophone padding, adjustment, key fitting, tenon work, with plenty of additional double reed work. They should be able to demonstrate a high degree of skill at play testing, machining, soldering and brazing, and dent work.  Preference will be shown for applicants with previous managerial experience, crack repair, tenon replacement and/or double reed repair skills.

Duties include: working alongside and training technicians, managing the flow of instruments in and out of the shop, assisting other techs and the school reps with scheduling repairs, estimating woodwinds and brass efficiently and accurately, completing all services offered (COAs, Overhauls, PCs, and general repair) efficiently and to the highest standard, maintain store rental stock, inspect new instruments for quality control, prepare instruments for clinics/trials/appointments, evaluate instruments for consignment/purchase, maintain common work spaces

You should have: previous experience with shop management, repairing woodwinds (double reeds a bonus), and a willingness to train other techs, the ability to interact with customers efficiently while still being friendly, ability to work with a team, and the ability to teach and be teachable.

Hours: FT – Should be here during most of the week, here on Saturday a plus. Flexible schedule available

Our shop is: invested in our community, always growing in knowledge and experience, newly remodeled, low-pressure, well-lit, friendly to everyone (even introverts), focused on service to our customers and each other, willing to learn from each other, dedicated to high standards, part of a vibrant walkable community, proud to have consistent clientele growth, dedicated to a loyal customer base, connected to a winds-focused retail store. We have 2 current woodwind techs, 1 brass tech, 1 luthier/store manager, 1 sheet music manager, 1 road rep, 1 IT person/salesperson, 2 jack-of-all-trades/salespersons, 2 part-time sales people and a rental fleet of about a thousand instruments. We do work for the local university, local community colleges, at least 12 school districts, local symphonies and several community bands and orchestras.

Perks to being in Bellingham: Bellingham is a laid-back town that loves beer, coffee, and the outdoors. There are two breweries within walking distance (15+ in town, many award winning), good restaurants within walking distance, lots of good food and drinks in town, several local music festivals (Darrington Blues Fest, Bellingham Festival of Music, Downtown Sounds, Marrowstone, etc.), decent music scene for just about every kind of music (jazz, classical, folk, bluegrass, indie, rock, etc), close to many skiing/snowboarding and waterfront activities, kayaking, fishing, world class trail system for biking, running and hiking, Ski-to-Sea race, friendly and safe environment and neighborhood, close to freeway, museums, art galleries, good schools, located halfway between Vancouver and Seattle (less than 2 hours to either), a vibrant arts scene, and good local shopping.
